GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
|
Student support at UCR is provided to "new" graduate students in a variety of forms: fellowships, traineeships, teaching assistantships (TAs) and graduate student researcher (GSR) appointments. Financial need-based support is provided in the form of loans and grants-in-aid through the Financial Aid Office. It is likely that, over the course of the doctoral program, students will receive a combination of these types of support.
Dean’s Fellowships are among the most prestigious awards offered and provide student support to outstanding entering Ph.D. students. The first year of support is (usually) provided by the Graduate Division with a stipend plus fees. The second, third or fourth years of support are provided by the department in the form of a fellowship, teaching assistantship, or graduate student researcher appointment. Students may receive a fifth year of fellowship support during the dissertation-writing year.

DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIPS FOR ENTERING STUDENTS
|
| Eugene Cota-Robles Award (ECRA) |
Eugene Cota-Robles Awards (ECRA) are funded jointly by the Office of the President of the University of California and the UCR Graduate Division. This award supports a limited number of students and is intended to support students from diverse backgrounds who are entering Ph.D. programs and interested in university teaching and research. For the first year, the ECRA pays $15,000 stipend plus registration fees. Recipients will receive a second year ECRA during their third, fourth or fifth year. During the years not funded by the ECRA, students are supported by salaried positions as teaching assistants, graduate student research appointments or on traineeships.
Additionally, individuals must be from a cultural, linguistic, geographic and/or socioeconomic background where under-representation is present in graduate education. The intent of this prestigious fellowship is to provide access to higher education for students who might otherwise find it difficult or impossible to successfully pursue graduate study.
|
| Purpose |
One objective of the ECRA is to release recipients from employment or loan obligations that might delay progress in graduate study. Another is to place students on a "fast-track" for academic careers, and thereby to increase the number of highly qualified candidates for faculty positions at the University of California.
|
| Eligibility |
- Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
- Recipient must enhance the diversity of the department.
- Nominee must be recommended for admission to the Ph.D.; or a Masters program as the requisite of the Ph.D., where the Ph.D. is the ultimate goal of the nominee (e.g., English, History, Spanish at UCR).

- Must demonstrate high potential and promise and indicate an interest in an academic career in teaching and research.
- Must complete the Supplemental pages 4a and 4b of the Admission Application [link].
- Recipient may not simultaneously hold another fellowship award of similar or greater amount.
|
| Award Components |
- Multi-year funding: two years of fellowships and two years of guaranteed departmental support as a TA/GSR position.
- Recipient will receive an ECRA fellowship of $15,000 stipend (plus fees, non-resident tuition first year only) for each "fellowship" year, beginning with Year 1.
- TA/GSR appointments (of at least equivalent funding level) to be provided for Years 2-3 or Years 2-3-4.
- A second year of ECRA fellowship is awarded in either Year 3, 4 or 5 (the dissertation-year).
- Recipient must work closely with faculty mentor. The mentor guides the ECRA Fellow through development of a curricular plan, and the acquisition of knowledge and skills that will permit the selection of an appropriate dissertation topic leading to the completion of the doctoral degree.
